Watching LIFE OF RYAN: THE CARETAKER MANAGER was a dream come through. I have a very huge obsession with Manchester United Football Club. My obsession began when my uncle in England began sending me merchandise of Manchester United to me in Trinidad at the age of eight. I was a lover of football but I had no specific favourite team at the time. I had a favourite player. His name was Juan Roman Riquelme. After getting the merchandise I began following the team through my older cousin because that had happen to be his favourite team. From there my obsession just grew and grew. I got all the new gear courtesy my dad every new season. My birthday cakes were in the form of Manchester United logos and t-shirts. I remembered my dad promised to take me to England to actually watch a Manchester United match. I remember how overwhelmed with joy I was. I went and I told all my friends. I even added in a bit of extra information into because I was one hundred percent sure that I was going. Well up to this day it hasn’t materialised but one day I guess it would. This documentary at least gave me the illusion that I did though. 2013/2014, one of the most depressing seasons as Manchester United fan. The team had just gotten a new coach after having the same coach for more than a decade. That coach was a mess. He crashed us all the way into the bottom half of the table. At the same time Ryan Giggs was the most senior player on the team.

The Manchester United board couldn’t take it anymore and fired the coach. Ryan Giggs was then hired as the caretaker coach for the remaining games of the 2013/2014 season. His caretaking reign and a history of who he is was the main storyline in the documentary. For me that year turning on my TV and watching those games that season was so heart breaking. I was not considering that things could’ve been falling apart behind the scenes I was so caught up by the terrible performances on the pitch. This documentary gave me the insight that I lacked and made me look at that season totally different. The documentary was like a backstage pass to a concert of my favourite singer. My favourite singer is Sia by the way, The cameras took you to the training ground that year. It took me up close and personal with Ryan during his reign as caretaker manager. I was able to see my favourite players in the gym. I was closer to pitch than usually when the game highlights should during the documentary. I was so amazed. It honestly was like childhood dream come through. I had butterflies in my stomach the entire time watching the documentary. I’m sorry but this documentary was the closest thing to what my dad promised me. I honestly made the best of my experience watching the documentary.
